Okay… So, listen — Before you finish reading this post, you’re going to find yourself wondering if this guy is INSANE… SIMPLY DELUSIONAL… A GENIUS (they say there’s a fine line between genius and insanity — and who am I to say on which side of that fence I might actually sit?)… or WHATEVER — and you’re also going to wonder whether or not everthing I’m about to say here, is actually legitimate, and possibly true, and what I believe it to be.

All I ask is that you give me the benefit of the doubt for awhile…  read my story… consider it with as open a mind as you can muster — then let the pieces fall where they may.

In the end… if I turn out to actually be INSANE or DELUSIONAL — at least the authorities will be alerted and they can come strap me into a strait jacket, haul me away, and put me on some meds. — But IF I AM CORRECT in what I believe… then we will be on a course to make great strides in solving many of the world’s most serious and challenging problems, and set the stage for “HAPPIER LIVES FOR EVERYONE!”

 Sound good? — Okay.  Well, let’s get started.

For starters — WHO AM I?

My name is Michael L. Brown (My friends call me Mike)… I’m 49 years old… I live in Fostoria, Ohio (USA)… I’m born and bred of the working class, here in the rural heartland of Northwest Ohio… I’m happily married (and have been for 25 years)… Have 5 children (all of whom are now adults, and out on their own — “Hoorah!” :D   )… 7 grand-children (and 1 on the way)… 1 great grand-child… and two small dogs (a terrier mix and a miniature dachsund).

PAST EMPLOYMENT:  I was employed in RETAIL for 7 years (3 yrs. as an Asst. Mgr in a discount chain store)… MANUFACTURING/MACHINING for 15 years (where I rose up from being an entry level machine operator to managing my employer’s stockroom)… THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY  for 7 years (where I worked with my wife in a family-owned mortgage brokerage business)… CONSTRUCTION (1 yr.)… ETHANOL MANUFACTURING (1.5 yrs.)… and for the last two years — I’ve been largely unemployed, other than my work on the project that I will soon be telling you about.

EDUCATION:  I graduated high school in 1981 (with a 3.2 gpa — General Studies and some College Prep Coursework)… Since 1983 (29 yrs.) I have engaged in an intense ongoing, personal self-study of ”All Things Business-Related” (wherein I’ve developed my mastery level knowlegde of Business Management, Business Planning, Business Development, Strategic Management and Development, Marketing, Public Relations, Brand Management and Development, Product Development, Intellectual Property Rights (Patents, Trademarks, and Copyright Law), Business Law, Accounting, Finance, etc.) … in 1989-1990, I attended community college on a part-time basis while working to support my family, but dropped out after 2 semesters to start my first side-line business (because I needed to be making more money to support my family, and wasn’t learning anything I didn’t already know, or couldn’t learn on my own, as I had been doing for 7 years up to that point)   

Throughout my career (for the last 28 yrs.) I have additionally worked on the development of large scale business plans and product development projects, in addition to my jobs working for other employers.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:  Logical Problem Solving… Creative Projects and Creative Thinking… System Optimization/Efficiency Expert (possess an advanced capacity for assessing systems and making them work with ”maximum efficiency”)… Market Opportunity Identification (possess an advanced capacity for identifying and assessing market needs and solutions for serving them)… Business Planning and Development… Product Development… Concept Development… Conceptual Web Development… Technical Writing… Copywriting… and more.

HOBBIES:  Business Development… Professional Networking… Musician (singing/guitar/bass guitar/song writing)… Book Collecting (95% non-fiction – many college textbooks)… Blogging and Writing… Family and Friends… Motorcycling (HARLEY-DAVIDSON RULES! — Unfortunately I had to sell my bike — But I do plan on getting another one at the first available opportunity    )

CURRENT EMPLOYMENT:  Am the Founder, CEO, and Director of Development for MAG-NET MEDIA HUB, LTD and Brown Developmental.  — However it should be known that MAG-NET MEDIA HUB, LTD is in pre-seed startup (which means it has no money, no revenues, and no funding at present) and while I seek to additionally provide my professional services as a consultant, public speaker, and service provider through Brown Developmental… I have not yet had ANY clients employ my services as of this time (primarily because I haven’t really had any money to market them — or at least I hope this is the reason.)  — With these things said:  While I’ve got some pretty grand titles, as well as some aspirations, and projects I’m working to develop… my official status is:  UNEMPLOYED and WITHOUT INCOME.       

Okay — so now you’ve got a good idea about my background, who I am, and how I generally think.  What it doesn’t tell you, however, is what I’m currently working on right now.  Read on, and all will soon be revealed.

I’ve been writing my ass off for the past week and a half, trying to get some financial support for my economic development solution, that I’ve been working to bring to market for 8 long years, and have rolled into the The MAG-NET MEDIA HUB and MAG-NET LOCAL — because last week was my last week of unemployment benefits, and now I’ve got no income whatsoever to support my wife and myself, and keep us from ending up out in the street.  — So these are the last ditch efforts of a drowning intellectual and self-proclaimed social scientist of the working class — who has been trying to do everything he can to bring the culmination of 8 years of intense economic development research and development to the world, before he has to put that project on INDEFINITE HOLD… and take whatever $10.00 an hour job he can find.

Believe me… it has been no walk in the park, but maybe this was how God intended this solution to be brought to the world.  I can only hope.  — Because that would mean I will ultimately be successful in this last ditch effort, and that the world, and the American Poor and Working Class — and ultimately, the poor and working classes around the globe — will soon get the “economic deliverence” that everyone needs.

Well anyway — I’ve been writing alot because a I posted some discussions on several of my LinkedIn Groups, in an attempt to try to reach some contacts for governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, angel investors and investor groups, etc. — who would possibly be willing to engage me and assess my research from the past 8 years, as well as my plan, proposed solution, and prototype sites, for the web resource that I believe is capable of delivering to the world —

 “A New Economic Engine for a New Economic Age!”

While I’ve made a few possible contacts through those discussions… nothing seems to be happening fast enough.  And I am now 4 days into a week of trying to make these connections that I need to make, as part of this last ditch effort— when I more logically should have actually been out beating the bush for whatever job I could possibly find.

So, anyway — amid answering questions on my discussions on LinkedIn, and jumping back and forth between my email account and the discussion boards, to see what new questions and comments might have been posted on each of the boards, I found myself responding to a question on my post on the WHITE HOUSE ECONOMY SUBGROUP (which is a group on LinkedIn, administered by The WHITE HOUSE — (yes, the one in Washington D.C. that  President Barack Obama and his family currently reside in)…  that I’ve been hopeful would yield some serious activity from a great many highly qualified experts close to the federal government, but that has very much been largely disappointing, to say the least.

— But after I got done posting my response on that discussion, I began looking to see what other discussions might be active in the group, and where my discussion might have then been appearing within the group’s discussion list.  — And besides not even seeing my discussion in the Top 20 (which was rather disheartening, to say the least), or even anywhere on the first page… I saw a new post by a guy named Luc… with the discussion title of:

“America Faces a Worldwide Economic Revolution”

“Well, that looks interesting” I thought… “Maybe I can post something to that discussion board that might prove helpful to my cause, and maybe drive some additional traffic to my discussion board.”

So, I logged into the discussion thread and found that no one had yet posted any comments to it.  — And that other than the title of the thread — “America Faces a Worldwide Economic Revolution” — there was only a link to a post on the Skeptical Market Observer Blogspot of the same name. (Click Here to access that article)  — So, I clicked on it… and read it… gathered my thoughts… and then set about work, adding my comments about the article, to the LinkedIn group discussion.  

However… I was on a discussion board on the WHITE HOUSE ECONOMY SUBGROUP!  — And by God, I was going to make it count for something!

So, I rolled up my sleeves (well, not really — because I was sitting there wearing a disheveled and “holey” Harley Davidson short-sleeved t-shirt that I had been wearing for two days, and had even slept in, the night before) and began my work.

Before the smoke had cleared, I had filled up THREE comment boxes in succession, with around 12,000 characters in all… and had issued a SHOUT OUT to the Economic Development Community, the WHITE HOUSE, and to PRESIDENT OBAMA.

And here is what I said:   

(Part One)

Hi, Luc.

The article you linked to is filled with a host of truisms about the state of our economy, how we arrived here, and what we need to do to fix it.

However, the challenges arrayed before us that must be fixed, are so complex and dependent upon a great many “self-preservationists” in positions of power — who will likely continue to clutch and hold onto that power (and money) so tightly, that they’ll never be willing to “scale back” for the benefit of ALL Americans — that it is highly unlikely that solutions that could ultimately turn America back from the brink of destruction, will ever be implemented in time to do so.

While the article did do a good job of laying out the myriad of problems arrayed against us — like many articles and posts, it didn’t really offer any concrete solutions. And that’s because 99.99999999% of the worlds’ population — including the so-called geniuses in the seats of power — simply DO NOT KNOW HOW the American and World Economies can be saved, without throwing the American Working Class and Poor to the wolves.

You see, the emerging World Economy, as described in the article, is that of a One World Government with many multi-national corporations, financiers, and powerful political leaders, at it’s helm. Now, I know this is beginning to sound like a conspiracy theorist rant, but no — it’s not that at all. You see, I don’t believe that it’s the by-product of any kind of major conspiracy or anything… just the natural development of an under-regulated free market system, developing as it would naturally under the influence of “intense greed” among the self-serving “elitist class”.

The elitist class has merely done what they do best. And that is — leverage their power and money to accumulate and control more power and money, without a second thought about America’s poor and working class. They’ve done what they’ve done with no thought or care about providing jobs and economic stability or viability for the people that they consider being on the front lines of America’s labor force. They have only cared about the money that they could put in their pockets from the American People’s naievete, by plying them with inexpensive products and electronics from Asia — like playboys plying a beautiful girl with cheap champaigne. And the American People fell for it. They’ve surrendered their standards of living and jobs for a few decades of being able to live like kings, with their TV’s in every room… their hot tubs and pools… their expensive cars and boats — virtually everything they could have ever imagined! — But, now what?

What do you do with the American Poor and Working Class, now that they’ve been bled about 60% dry? — When you no longer want to provide them with good paying jobs, because that would mean you having to get up off of some of your hoard? — When you no longer want to provide them with any form of social safety nets, to keep them from starving or living in the streets? — When you no longer give them any other choice but to run wild in the streets, robbing and looting to survive, and calling for revolution and the heads of the “ELITE” on a silver platter. (Remember the French Revolution? — the guillotines ran red with blood for 3 years, as “The People” did away with the “Ruling Elite and Aristocracy”.)

So, what do you do with them? — YOU EMPOWER THEM WITH THE ABILITY TO TRULY CREATE FOR THEMSELVES, THE KINDS OF LIVES THAT THEY WANT FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES.

(Part Two)

I’ve been a student of business and economics for nearly 30 years, and for the last 8 years I’ve been working on the problems of inefficiency within the job search, job creation, business development, and economic development areas of society. — And as crazy and megalomaniacal as it might sound — I’ve created a solution that can make it HUNDREDS OF TIMES EASIER for people to “Find Jobs… Build Careers… and Start and Expand Both New and Existing Businesses” wherever this solution is rolled out.

What needs to be done is that the playing field really needs to be leveled for everyone. Entrepreneurial-Minded People from ALL walks of life, and especially amongst the working class and poor, need to be provided with a better means of disseminating their needs within the marketplace. A means that will enable them to create the kinds of businesses that they want for themselves, that can generate the level of income that will sustain them and their families, and that will provide them with the level of “personal job satisfaction” that they seek.

AUTOMATION IN MANUFACTURING NEEDS TO BE MAXIMIZED!

Here’s a little tidbit of information that many people don’t realize… the majority of the people in the working class and amongst the working poor HATE their jobs! (Hard to imagine, right?)

A study done in 2007 (even before the collapse of the housing bubble) showed that 4 out of 5 factory workers literally HATED their jobs. Which obviously meant that they would have rather been doing something else, right?. — But because the better paying jobs that they were able to acquire in their local communities were factory jobs — they NEEDED to work in manufacturing jobs in order to try to adequately support the needs of themselves and their families.

Well, guess what? The jobs in manufacturing simply aren’t there anymore, and now we’ve got MILLIONS of displaced factory workers struggling to survive as their unemployment benefits have largely run out, and there is absolutely no place for them to turn.

At the same time, the loss of their incomes have affected a multitude of people in other industries and segments of society, and are pushing state, local, and federal governments to their breaking points.

If you want to turn this economy around and to not only keep the world as we know it from going down the tubes, but create a NEW ECONOMY and a NEW SOCIETY that is better… and happier… than any times that may have ever come before — then the solution that I’ve discovered and developed MUST be put in place.

In 2006 (3 years into my research and development project) I was thinking about WHY the solution I had developed could make it HUNDREDS OF TIMES EASIER for people to “Find Jobs… Build Careers… and Start and Expand Both New and Existing Businesses” — and what I learned was that mankind had been utilizing largely the same strategy for “disseminating opportunities”, the same way for 150,000 years! — Since the dawn of commerce in mankind’s history!

However, in the late 1970′s… population growth, technological developments, etc., had brought us to a point where the old paradigm was no longer sufficient for our continued economic growth. — And at that time, a new strategy for managing “opportunity dissemination” in society, not only needed to be put in place before we could advance economically as an intellectual species… but before we could actually attain our next higher economic age, that the development and proliferation of the internet could provide.

So, if you really want to know why we’ve been struggling in a continuous succession of rising and falling economic indicators, fueled by the development and bursting of various “bubbles” (the dot.com bubble, the housing bubble, the stock market bubble, etc.) it’s because our society has required an “upgrade” in our “opportunity dissemination infrastructure” (an infrastructure that the scientific community doesn’t even recognize as existing — which should tell you something about the true complexities of economics, and mankind’s level of ignorance in regards to this area of quasi-science) since the late 1970′s.

(Funny that the author of the post at the heart of this discussion said we’d been in need of “economic revolution” for 30 years — he was only 5 years short.)

Take heart in the fact that while we’ve been in need of this infrastructure updgrade for 35 years, and have had the level of technology mastery required to implement it for 15 years (but lacked the knowledge and will to implement it) — the solution to our economic problems are close at hand.

— That is, if I can find someone to help me fund the completion of the required resource, and get it rolled out to towns, cities, and villages across the United States, and then the world. (Hint, Hint )

Yeah, I’m talking to YOU, “WHITE HOUSE” and PRESIDENT OBAMA!

Does anybody up there have their ears on?

— A largely self-educated, working class, college-dropout social scientist, and self-proclaimed expert on business development, economic development, and job creation — from the “sticks” of Northwest Ohio — is out here “BANGIN’” on the White House Doors… trying to get your attention and tell you that I’VE GOT THE SOLUTION TO OUR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS! So, how about taking a little time to hear me out and maybe give me a little help in bringing this new solution to the masses?!?

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to actually DO something about the problems that we face, rather than simply TALKING about them all of the time?!?

Okay — well that’s it.  So, what do you think?

All I know for sure — besides the fact that the economic development solution I’ve developed, truly is everything that I said it was — is that I will be extremely sad if I don’t get some serious consideration for my project, after that post.

Why? — It’s not for the reasons that you might think.  — It’s not because I would naturally stand to become super wealthy (a BAZILLIONAIRE even!) from developing and rolling out a resource such as the one described.  — But, because of the psychological impact that such a revelation can have on a person.

Imagine… if you had been looking for a job in 2003… and after experiencing — first-hand for the first time in 20 years — the terrible inefficiencies in society’s job search infrastructure… and you had personally experienced a “lightbulb moment” in which you cried out:

“I just wish there was a publication that I could pick up from the corner store, that had ALL of the area’s jobs listed in it!  That way I’d never have to worry about missing out on a good job opportunity!  I’d be willing to pay $10.00 for a publication like that!”

Well, that’s what happened to me.  — But unlike with most people… I am an entrepreneurial-minded guy.  — And to me, that was a challenge that I felt I was capable of undertaking… and developing and bringing to market — so I DID take up that challenge!

Then… after 3 years of  mostly 18-hour work days… — After developing the 250-page launch plan with 150 pages of appendixes… — And developing the required prototype for the publication and concept that was capable of making it HUNDREDS OF TIMES EASIER for people to “Find Jobs… Build Careers… and Start and Expand Both New and Existing Businesses” wherever those localized publishing operations were rolled out… — And working feverishly to find serious consideration and funding to move the project forward…  — After 3 years of that — when that revelation concerning the project came upon me (that I referred to in my LinkedIn post above), and made me believe that the POSSIBILITY EXISTED THAT GOD may have somehow planned for this solution to come to mankind through me!  — That perhaps all of the struggles that I had gone through, throughout my entire life up to that point… may have been so that I might be able to learn all of the lessons that I might need to learn, in order to bring this innovation — “A NEW ECONOMIC ENGINE… FOR A NEW ECONOMIC AGE!“ — to the World!  — THAT EXPERIENCE placed a great deal of burden on my soul and on my psyche, that I’ve carried with me ever since.

Because how can one give up on a quest that one believes may have been ordained and set upon him, by God?!?  — That would be like Noah saying “No, God… I don’t think that I can build this Ark that you want me to build, so I’m just going to quit and go do something else” — How could someone quit a project like that?!? — Before expending their every last energy in trying to bring it to fruition?!?

This is exactly what I’ve faced since 2006.  — That has kept driving me onward… — Forcing me to keep this project in the forefront of my mind, and not letting me drop it… or forget about it… or stray very far from a path that could lead to it’s ultimate roll out and success.

In 2007 — when the mortgage industry ultimately collapsed — and the substantial income that my wife had been earning, which had been financing my ability to continue working full-time on the project for 4 long years… collapsed along with it…  — And I was forced to take a job as a Site Maintenance Man on a construction site for $12.50 per hour.  — When that phase of my quest to bring my economic development solution to mankind… and all viable routes for bringing it to market evaporated before me — could I simply drop the project?  No — I couldn’t!  Something inside me said “You’ve simply got to figure out another way!”

So, I began working on “The MAG-NET MEDIA HUB“… a website that would make it easier for people to find the official websites of magazines online… — And I did this with the idea that I could launch that website, and make a good deal of money from that business, that I could then use to bring my economic development solution to market.

But, 2 years later — after working a full-time job to support my family, and working every other available minute on the development of the website — while I had largely completed enough work on the MAG-NET MEDIA HUB to actually begin ramping it up in the Spring of 2010 — even after I found myself in the unemployment line once again after 2.5 grueling years of hell — something just kept telling me — “No, it’s not ready yet… Keep working on it… Keep refining it.”  — So, I did.

Then 1 year later — in the Spring of 2011 — I was moved to begin work on the localized, geographic-based aspect of the MAG-NET MEDIA HUB, which I later called “MAG-NET LOCAL“.  — And in May of 2011, I received the inspiration to roll the economic development solution that I had developed in 2003, into each of the MAG-NET LOCAL HUBSITES, and thus — the “Economic Development Suites” of MAG-NET LOCAL were born!

— And when I ultimately finished with the prototype design… I looked upon the entire MAG-NET MEDIA HUB and MAG-NET LOCAL projects and systems, with the Economic Development Suites added to the mix… and I realized that I had created the PERFECT STRATEGY for delivering the economic development solution to the marketplace, and to mankind!

With all of the things that I’ve relayed to you here — how could I possibly feel anything but sad at the prospect of having to put this project on hold once again, and suffer under who knows how many more years of torment and exhaustion, until I can ultimately bring this solution to market, or die in the process.

No… that’s why NOW is the time to take a stand!  NOW is the time to make sure my voice is heard, whatever the cost!  And NOW is the time to bring this solution to market, or die trying!  — So help me God!

A big part of what I must do as a “would-be entrepreneur” — one who has a BIG INNOVATION that he is seeking to bring to market, but must first find partners and potential funding sources to help make that innovation a reality — is to surf the world wide web and participate in discussions on social media sites, in an effort to identify potential partners and funding sources for my project.

Today, I received a post to a discussion I had started on a LinkedIn Group, that asked the question:

At the heart of the particular post that was submitted in response to my discussion question, was a college student who was basically saying that he had developed a website and “social business” in Brazil, with the goal of helping the 150,000 inhabitants of the Complexo do Alemão Area in Rio de Janeiro Brazil — 60% of which had no form of income whatsoever — stating that his website would be able to provide jobs to people in that area. 

The site and business was basically an NGO (Non-Government Organization) or Non-Profit Organization, that provided a contest and awards program to help people create “social businesses”  — which I took to mean businesses that were “social media” in nature, or that would somehow be self-sustaining and help to create jobs in the Complexo do Alemão area (it was really hard to tell, as much was possibly lost in translation from the Spanish Language to English).

— But anyway… this college student had created some type of business model that could possibly help in finding jobs for people in the Complexo do Alemão area in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

Great!  — Best Wishes and all the power to him…  — I sincerely hope it becomes and accomplishes everything that he wants it to accomplish.

The interesting thing was, however, that when I followed the link to the first website that he had linked to in his post — it took me to a page on the “Dell Social Innovation Challenge” Website — where this college student had submitted his business idea as part of this challenge — and while I couldn’t tell if he had won some money from it, or some aspect of it — anyway — there he was… he had submitted his project to be a part of this contest or challenge.

When I investigated this “Dell Social Innovation Challenge” more closely, to see if it might be a potentially good avenue for me to personally follow, in trying to obtain access to potential partners and funding sources for my socially innovative projects — I found that it was only open to actively enrolled college students.

 — And this greatly bothered me (as you might be able to imagine as I was obviously moved to write a blogpost about it, and tell them about themselves on the Dell Social Innovation Challenge Facebook Page.

— And since I figured that they would probably end up removing my post from their wall on Facebook… I figured that if I really wanted to make a lasting impression with my comments, I would need to add them to my blog here on WordPress, as well.

And so… without further adieu — here it is: 

Although it is great to see Dell doing “something” to help in developing new innovations with the potential of great social impact to the world… I can’t help but wonder why you decided to limit this program to college students only.

Do you seriously think that older entrepreneurial-minded people, who are NOT active college students, and may or may not have already graduated from college, aren’t out here in the private sector trying to bring socially innovative projects to market, and would potentially benefit from being able to participate in this program?

Doesn’t it seem that this “Social Innovation Competition” is more so than anything, another fine example of rampant “AGE DISCRIMINATION” within our society?

And what message does this send to our nation’s youth?

— That they will never be able to add more value to society than what they might potentially add while they’re young and in college?

— That they will eventually (in 5 to 10 years) have to face the same stigma of age discrimination themselves… so take advantage of it and enjoy it while you can?

— That older people with more life experience to offer, are somehow “dumber” than younger people with little or no life experience?

This kind of thinking flies in the face of logic, and therefore makes this program potentially more detrimental to society, than good.

I guess if the name of the program was something like “The Dell Collegiate Competition for Social Innovation”, or “The Dell Scholarship for the Socially Innovative”… it would have probably set better with me.  However, by calling it the “Dell Social Innovation Challenge“ you’ve indicated that the program is much broader, and all-inclusive, than it actually is.

Okay… well that’s pretty much about all I’ve got to say about it.

Good Luck to every college student that enters the contest.  I hope you can come up with some ideas and projects that can truly change the world.  Because we seriously need it.

ON BECOMING A MAN – Part One

“In the days of my youth, I was told what it is to be a man… Now I’ve reached that age, I’ve tried to do all those things the best I can…”  — Opening line from the song “Good Times Bad Times” by Led Zeppelin

 

 Every young boy thinks a bit differently.

With some… the difference is like night and day — with much depending on the environment within which they are raised.

But as for myself, I can remember that when I was a young lad in the late 60′s and earyly 70′s, I was very interested in “manly things”, and in learning to become the best man that I could possibly be.

I very much enjoyed reading books and watching television shows and movies, and gravitated mostly towards those that portrayed men doing adventurous and heroic things — like rescuing damsels in distress… bringing criminals to justice… exploring outer space… sailing the ocean blue… fighting off monsters, and saving the world… and  going off to war for their country.

And while I learned a lot about being a good man from my father, who provided the best of examples for myself and my two brothers — he was a hard worker… physically strong, but never abusive in any way (even when he occasionally had to whip our butts with a belt, for good reason)… he didn’t drink alcohol or smoke, but wasn’t against uttering a few “cuss words” now and then, when he felt he needed to make a point… and you always knew that he would stand up and fight anybody (and probably win) and do whatever he had to do to protect his family, at all costs… — but even though he had provided me with such a great example of what a good man should be… and much of it had already taken hold — at the age of thirteen — at the dawn of my manhood — I found myself asking myself the question… “What kind of man do I want to be, when I grow up?”

I wasn’t asking myself what I wanted to be when I grew up, because I had thought about that before, and pretty much already decided that I wanted to be some kind of rich businessman… or a scientist… or a soldier… or a rock and roll star… or a famous actor.  — No, I wasn’t asking myself what I wanted to be… — I was asking myself something altogether new and different…  — “What SORT OF MAN DID I WANT TO BE when I grew up?”

How did I want my family and friends to perceive me to be, and look upon me — as a man — when I grew up?

— Did I want to be physically strong and capable of very hard and heavy work, or did I not really care about that?

— Did I want to be courageous, and stand up for myself and what was right, at all costs… or would I allow myself to be the kind of guy that would back down to save his own skin, when the going got tough? 

— Did I want to be honest and forthright, or did I want to be conniving and scheming?

— Did I want to stay on the right side of the law, or did I want to become a criminal?

— Did I want to do an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, or did I want to take it wherever I could get it?

— Did I want to be a smooth talker and lay with every girl that caught my eye, or did I want to find that special girl that I could love and raise a family with?

— Did I even want to have children or a family?

— Did I even want to get married?

— Did I want to be the flashy man with a lot of cash and nice things, or could I be satisfied with the working class lifestyle that I had been raised in?

— What kind of man do women want?

All of these questions just kept flooding into my brain, and I knew that I had reached the point in my life where I needed to make these decisions about how I was going to move forward, and live my life from there.  — Because I was thirteen… I was a teenager now… and I was beginning to feel a real aching in my soul for the smiles… and the company… and the affection of — (you guessed it) — GIRLS!

So, I thought very hard about it.  I knew I wanted to be a good man… — One that my parents could be proud of… — So, where could I find a list of principles for being a good man?  (Remember… this was 1975… — Before the invention of personal computers and the internet.  Information like that wasn’t just readily available back then.)

“There’s the Bible!” I thought.

Although my family wasn’t really religious, and we NEVER went to church, except for weddings and funerals… each of my brothers and myself had a Children’s Bible that one of our aunts and uncles had bought for us, many years before… so I pulled it out at and began looking through it.  — However, It wasn’t too long before I thought “This is going to take a long time to find the answers I’m looking for.  Where else might I find out about the principles of being a good man?” —Then it dawned on me!  — THE CODE OF CHIVALRY!

I remembered that I had taken out a book from the library once… about knights, and castles, and the middle ages… and in it had been a list of virtues that knights were supposed to live by, called the CODE OF CHIVALRY.  I then decided that I needed to go back to the library… find that book again… and then I would have my answers.  So that’s what I did.  — And though I can’t recount the exact code that I found in that library book, back in 1975 — here’s a list that I found on a website from England (http://www.castles.me.uk/medieval-code-chivalry.htm), that seems to be pretty much how I remember it.

THE CODE OF CHIVALRY 

To fear God and maintain His Church
To serve the liege lord in valour and faith
To protect the weak and defenceless
To give succour to widows and orphans
To refrain from the wanton giving of offence
To live by honour and for glory
To despise pecuniary reward
To fight for the welfare of all
To obey those placed in authority
To guard the honour of fellow knights
To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit
To keep faith
At all times to speak the truth
To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun
To respect the honour of women
Never to refuse a challenge from an equal
Never to turn the back upon a foe.

Yeah — that’s pretty much how I remember it, except that I sort of remember there being something about respecting your elders in there somewhere… but that might have come from the Bible.  I’m not sure.  — Which — by the way — I DID end up reading the entire Bible shortly after this episode in my life, and decided that I would also do my best, to live my life according to the TEN COMMANDMENTS as well.  — Which, here is a link to that list as well, if you’re interested, or unfamiliar with them… (source: http://www.allabouttruth.org/10-commandments.htm)

But anyway — believe it or not — I’ve pretty much used the combination of all of these tenets, and lived my life by the majority of them (and other personal beliefs) ever since… — And from the age of thirteen to now, they have provided me with a strong foundation in my decision-making as a man, and have been a true source of strength when fear, anger, or confusion, might rear it’s ugly head, and cloud one’s judgement.

So, if you’re a young man looking for guidance, as I was… or if you’re the parent or friend of a young man who is seemingly struggling to find his way in the world… — or … if you are an older man who just isn’t happy about the way his life has been going up to this point…  — Don’t forget about the CODE OF CHIVALRY and the TEN COMMANDMENTS.  — They are as relevent today, as they were when they were written centuries ago… and they will serve you well.

(Plus — THE GIRLS WILL SIMPLY LOVE YOU FOR IT!  They are all yearning for gentlemen and knights in shining armor… So prove to them that “CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD!” — Become a REAL MAN and ADOPT THE CODE! )

The sign above just about says it all… or does it?  What do you think?  — Let’s examine it a little more closely…

THIS IS YOUR LIFE… Yes… Of course each person’s life is their own.  Ultimately, no one can make decisions for you, and no one is responsible for the outcomes of the decisions you make.  No one except for you.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE, AND DO IT OFTEN… Yes… As long as what you love does not hurt or infringe upon the rights of others, do what you love and do it as often as you can.  Temper this, however, with the knowledge that “too much of a good thing, can be bad for you.”  You must find the proper balance.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE SOMETHING, CHANGE IT… There are lots of things that you are not going to like, that will have influence on your life and the decisions you make.  Some things are personal things, some things are social things, and some things are legal things, or governmentally-imposed laws on society.

Some things you can change, and some things will be outside of your control to change.  — To find happiness in life, you must strive to change those things that you do not like, or do not agree with — but ultimately you must decide for yourself how you will react to those things that you cannot change… learn to live within that reality… and be willing to take responsibility for your actions in relation to those things that you are unsuccessful in changing.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR JOB, QUIT…  I really like the thought behind this one, but how realistic is it really?

If you quit that job you don’t like, you better have another one lined up (hopefully one that you’ll be happier with), or a good deal of your own money to rely on, if you’ll be going into business for yourself.

Don’t expect others – your parents, your children, your family members, or society — to support you financially.  Don’t be a financial burden on others.  Every teen and adult that is of working age, needs to be pulling their own weight, supporting themselves financially, and living within their means.

Maybe they should change this one to “PREPARE FOR AND SEEK OUT THE JOB AND LIFE THAT YOU WANT”   

IF YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME, STOP WATCHING TV…  I can’t argue with that one, but sometimes you’ve just got to “VEGETATE IN FRONT OF THE TUBE”.  — You know what Imean?

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE, STOP.  THEY WILL BE WAITING FOR YOU WHEN YOU START DOING THINGS YOU LOVE…  This is actually very good advice.  If you are frantically looking for love, you are probably going to come off as desperate, and turn potential mates off.  — But, if you get out and become socially involved in things that you have a passion for, or are interested in… then you will be positioning yourself to come into contact with people – and potential mates – with whom you share common interests, and are possibly compatible.   — Very good advice…

STOP OVER-ANALYZING.  LIFE IS SIMPLE…  OOPS!  Looks like we’re breaking this one!

I don’t really know what to think about this one.  Living a life of happiness and contentment often seems to be anything but simple.  Every day you are faced with decisions that shape your life and have implications on your future.

Perhaps they mean to refer to the idea of ”Live for Today, and Just Deal With Tomorrow When It Comes.”

— While I definitely believe in trying to take the occassional moment to “Stop and Smell the Roses…” and enjoy the world and people around me — I’m not a big fan of the “Live for Today” concept.  — People who subscribe to it tend to take it much too literally, believing that they can just muddle through life day by day, casting their future to the wind, and believing that everything will just work itself out in the end.  — These are the same people that often end up relying on someone else to bail them out, when their lack of planning and bad decision-making finally catches up with them.

Ultimately, your happiness tomorrow depends on the seeds of happiness (the decisions you make in planning for your future happiness) that you plant today.  You must envision the happy life that you want to have… determine what you need to do to obtain it… then develop and implement a plan that will get you there.

Throwing all caution to the wind and simply doing “What Feels Good Right Now…” is a haphazard way of living that ultimately makes you less happy — both in the short term, and in the long run.  — Again… it’s a matter of finding the proper balance.  — Develop a plan… implement that plan… revel in the happiness that comes along the way, because “the majority of the happiness in your life comes during the journey, not in the destination”… and take every moment you can to reflect on your life and the world around you.

The world is MAGICAL!  — Life is MAGICAL! — So, try to take the occassional moment to admire it and watch it unfold.  “Stop and Smell the Roses”… but don’t let it keep you from preparing for your happiness in the future.

ALL EMOTIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL…  This is simply not true.

LOVE is beautiful… JOY is beautiful… CONTENTMENT… ADMIRATION… COMPASSION… PRIDE IN ONE’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS — These are beautiful emotions.

But HATE is not beautiful… ANGER is not beautiful… JEALOUSY… CONTEMPT… SELFISHNESS… PRIDEFUL INDIGNATION — These are not beautiful emotions…

I’m sure you can think of others for both categories, but I think you get the picture.

WHEN YOU EAT, APPRECIATE EVERY LAST BITE…  Yes, definitely.

While EATING is something that most of us take for granted, do keep in mind that there are others who are less fortunate… — Some who are going to sleep hungry day after day, and some that are even dying from starvation.  So, be thankful for the food you have to eat…  — Savor every bite… — Give pause to reflect on the struggles of others, and what they are going through in life… — Say the occassional prayer for them, regardless of your faith… — You never know when YOU might become one of the less fortunate.  Such is life.

OPEN YOUR MIND, ARMS, AND HEART TO NEW THINGS AND PEOPLE.  WE ARE UNITED IN OUR DIFFERENCES…

Yes, open your MIND to new things and people… but don’t stop thinking for yourself.  Nobody has ALL of the answers, and you can learn a lot from people who have varying viewpoints. — However, don’t just take it for granted that others know what they’re talking about.  Be prepared to diligently research new ideas and apply serious logic to them, before declaring a new position for yourself, on those issues.

Opening your ARMS to new things and people is about welcoming new things and new people into your life.  Keep in mind, however, that you don’t want to just welcome everything and everyone into your life.  There are varying degrees of good things and good people, and bad things and bad people (out there), and so you must be very selective about what and who you truly let into your life.  — I think that this should be something more like “Be Open-Minded Enough to Give People a “Chance” to Become Part of Your Life”.

As for opening your HEART to new things and new people… YES, DO!  Opening your heart to new things and new people is about being more compassionate towards others, creating more LOVE in the world and in your life, and spreading the joy that is LIFE with everyone you come in contact with.  The world would be a much better place if everyone would do that, and it can start with YOU… TODAY!  Simply make the decision to focus on the POSITIVES in people and things, and not the NEGATIVES.  We are all brothers and sisters, so open your heart and provide LOVE and COMPASSION to ALL… — When you do, LOVE and HAPPINESS will permeate your life.

ASK THE NEXT PERSON YOU SEE, WHAT THEIR PASSION IS, AND SHARE YOUR INSPIRING DREAM WITH THEM…  WOW!  This is a rather intriguing proposition isn’t it!  I don’t know, however, if I would just walk up to someone on the street that I didn’t know and say “Hey… What is your passion in life?”  — They’d probably look at you as if you were some kind of crazy person, and may feel immediately compelled to flee for their safety!

But, what if you made it a point during casual conversations, with the people you know and come in contact with, to simply say — “So, how is life treating you today?” or “How’s it going?” — And after they’ve responded with the usual “Pretty well… and Yourself?”, you respond by telling them how your day is really going, and then ONE CASUAL SENTENCE about how YOU are progressing today towards achieving YOUR dreams in life — then a segue into what they might be passionate about.

For example — “Oh, things are going pretty well.  I’d rather be (   fill in the blank with what you’d rather be doing   )  but I’ll get there sooner or later.  How about yourself?  What would you rather be doing right now?”

You see, while it may not be socially acceptable to simply come out and ask someone what their passion in life might be, there are ways to go about it that will acheive the same result, and make you seem friendlier and more inviting in the process, and not so much like an escaped mental patient.  It’s all in the delivery.

With that said… give it a try and see how it works for you!  — At the very least, it should be FUN… and the results might be quite informative, and possibly beneficial, in helping you to achieve the ultimate successes that you seek in life.

TRAVEL OFTEN.  GETTING LOST WILL HELP YOU FIND YOURSELF…  This too is an intriguing proposition, isn’t it?  There is just something about the idea of being able to travel to exotic destinations, leave the Rat Race behind (work, bills, family responsibilities, etc.), and just RELAX and HAVE SOME FUN for a change!  I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO TRAVEL OFTEN!  It’s one of my dreams in life that drives me!

 Traveling — however — can be a very expensive proposition.  Even a weekend jaunt can cost you a week’s pay or more, in this day and age.  Therefore — while I would advise you to TRAVEL AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN — I would never advise you to spend more on TRAVEL than you can afford.  Doing so will only result in a more complicated home life, that you will feel EVEN MORE COMPELLED TO ESCAPE FROM!  It can become like an ADDICTION that sends you spiraling out of control, both financially and emotionally!

So, if you have the financial means to travel often — by all means — travel often.  But if you don’t — maybe taking some time to take in a movie… go to dinner… maybe go dancing… to a swap meet… to an art gallery, museum, or zoo… to an auction or flea market… or to a comedy club or theater performance… — Maybe something like that will be enough to help you in occassionally “Getting Lost” and finding your center of balance.  — A weekend camping trip with friends… hitting the open road on a bicycle or motorcycle… hiking in the woods or wilderness — these are some other (even less expensive) things that you can do to “Get Lost and Find Yourself.”

The point (I think) is to occassionally do something DIFFERENT.  — Something that is outside of the boundaries of what you would consider doing in your normal everyday life.  — Something that will allow you to experience new things… meet new people… and expand your view of “LIFE and the World Around You”.   Find some activities like that, and infuse them into your busy schedule often… and you will be well on your way to becoming a true “Man” or “Woman” of the world.

SOME OPPORTUNITIES ONLY COME ONCE, SEIZE THEM…  Yes, but remember… successful people PREPARE themselves for the kinds of opportunities they want, then put themselves in an environment where those opportunities might make themselves available.  So, don’t just sit around waiting for some OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME to find you, because it only very rarely happens that way.

Finding opportunities is a lot like going fishing.  You’re not going to be very successful at landing a BIG FISH if you just go down to the river, without the right gear and supplies, and without knowing where the BIG FISH swim and feed.  You’ve got to prepare yourself for the opportunity, if you’re going to land that big fish when it swims into range.  

LIFE IS ABOUT THE PEOPLE YOU MEET, AND THE THINGS YOU CREATE WITH THEM.  SO GO OUT AND START CREATING…

Life is about whatever you truly want it to be about.

As far as creativity goes, we all create things constantly, without even realizing that were doing it.  We create circumstances… we create relationships… we create children… we create families… we create emotions and bonds with other people… we create reputations… and we create memories and experiences, among other things.  — We create LIFE as we know it.  — However, I’m not too sure that this is what the authors of the sign meant to infer.  — Maybe… Maybe not.

But, when I think about CREATIVITY in general, I think about it from the artistic viewpoint of creating THINGS, that I (and others) might enjoy, or that we might emotionally be moved by, or that might help us collectively in some way.

— THINGS that add color to our lives, and to the world — like Art… Music… Literary Works… etc. — as well as things that might help us in our daily lives — like Businesses… Homes… Income Opportunities… etc.  — And so, from that particular viewpoint… I must admit that as a creative artist — on the surface — this statement doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.  — Because, while creative people can definitely collaborate together on projects, creative juices work differently in each creative person, and so each person will be driven by their own unique vision for a particular project.

For example: You could assemble a dozen artistic painters and say “I want you to paint me a picture of a boat in a harbor”, and what you will get is twelve different pictures of a boat in a harbor.  Twelve unique visions and artistic representations of those twelve visions.  None of which will be wrong… All of which will stand alone, and exude some level of emotion and artistic excellence… And all of which will be deemed the “Best of the Bunch” by someone, based on their unique personal experiences, perceptions, and connections, to each work.

Likewise, in creating a web-based business, you could assemble a dozen web development entrepreneurs and say “I want you to create and launch a website, business plan, and business, that will focus on making it “Easier… More Enjoyable… and Much More FUN and EXCITING, for People Everywhere… to “Explore Life and the World Around Them”, through the World of Magazines, Periodicals, and Media Online.”  (By the way — this is my own business project — The MAG-NET MEDIA HUB — check it out at www.mag-netmediahub.com).  — In the end, what you will get is twelve very different websites, and twelve very different business plans, and twelve very different businesses… with varying levels of propensity for the mission at hand, and varying chances of success within the marketplace.  None of which will be wrong… All of which will stand alone, and exude some level of web design and concept and business excellence… And all of which will be deemed the “Best of the Bunch” by someone, based on their unique personal experiences, perceptions, and connections, to each website and business.

So, what exactly am I getting at?  — Creating THINGS like artistic works… businesses… websites… income opportunities… etc… can only be created (ultimately) around a single person’s creative vision for a project.  And, if it is a team project, or a project that requires a team approach — that means that the majority of the team’s participants are going to have to sacrifice certain parts of their “personal visions” for the project, and make concessions on things that they feel might be very important to the project.  — Which IS NOT something that most talented and creative artists and experts, are going to be all that thrilled about doing, for very long. 

— So yes — You can hire or ally yourself with people who have various skills and experience to help you in bringing YOUR vision to life, and you can even accept their input, advice, and workmanship, and integrate those things into YOUR vision… — And, of course… you can collaborate on the projects of others…  — However — every collaboration requires a single leader.  — Someone who will safegaurd the integrity of the ONE VISION (almost always theirs), around which, their project revolves.

So, if you want to create something that you think will be really cool… get down to business and start creating it.  — And if the thing you want to create will require a team of people working on it, to breathe life into it… then start telling people (especially potential contributors) about your idea, and what you’d like to do.  — Just know that this means that team members and project participants will come and go, because artistic and creative people do not like to compromise on their visions…  You must simply be willing to accept that, and keep moving on towards achieving YOUR ultimate vision for YOUR creative projects, whatever they might be.  — And that means “going it alone” if need be.

LIVE YOUR DREAM AND SHARE YOUR PASSION…  Living your dream is often easier “said” than “done”, but you must at least “TRY” — because through the effort of trying, comes the only chance you will ever have of attaining it.  So, give it your best shot…  — Leave no room for regrets… — And Yes — SHARE YOUR PASSION for EVERYTHING that you’re passionate about — every chance you get.

LIFE IS SHORT…  Yes, life is short.  As I look back over the past 49 years of my life, I can’t be more amazed at how fast the time has passed.  It seems like only yesterday, that I was still just a teenager in high school, with my whole life ahead of me.  — In fact, even though I’m older… fatter… grayer… and much more responsible than I was in my youth — I’m still just a kid at heart. — And I suspect that this is the same for you.

— I suspect that we ALL see LIFE and the world around us, through the eyes and minds of the children that we once were — for our entire lives…  — Except that as we grow older and older, we have many years of accumulated knowledge and experience (wisdom) — honed by many bouts of trial and error — to help guide us on our way.

So, that’s the end of the statements layed out on the sign above… but what would I add to it?

LEARN TO COMFORTABLY ACCEPT THE FACT OF YOUR OWN MORTALITY… None of us “gets out of life alive”… We will ALL perish from this Earth someday, and leave it to future generations of human beings and family members, to carry on without us.

During my youth, I — probably like you — spent the occassional moment worrying about death, and what would happen to ME… AFTER I died.  And so, I — like probably many of you — studied about the many religious beliefs in the world, in my quest to find the answers that would calm my fears about death.

Without saying here, exactly what I personally decided on the subject… I eventually found the comfort I was seeking, and when I did — a new found “Freedom from Fear” enveloped me, and I became more connected to life and the world around me, than I could have ever possibly imagined.  —Every moment in life was more beautiful!  —  Every person I met was more likeable!  — Every negative situation in life was more bearable!  — Everything in life that I had taken for granted, was more appreciated!

While I might talk more about my research into life and death, and my acquired beliefs — in later posts — I can only say here, that overcoming your fear and anxiety about your ultimate demise is imperitive, before you can achieve the ultimate level of happiness in your life.  — So, actively contemplate it…  research it… and come to whatever conclusions you come to.  — Know, however — and take comfort in the fact, that — in the end — like a moth becoming a butterfly — no matter what you end up believing in… death is not the end of your life.  — It is merely a transition… — A new beginning.

DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU… Be respectful towards other people.  Be respectful of their feelings… of their rights… and of their property (to name a few).  Your life will become much happier, and you will be surrounded by friends and goodwill, when you live your life by these words of wisdom.

BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS, AND DEMAND RESPECT IN RETURN… This goes hand in hand with the “Do Unto Others” statement above, but takes it to a different level.

What I am going to tell you, goes against what conventional society and religious doctrine has promoted for centuries, so take it for what it’s worth.  — Just know that it has served me well, all of my life… and that it is at the core of what has fueled my self confidence, throughout my entire existence.

When someone that you know disrespects you, you cannot let them get away with it.  Because, when you let them get away with it once, you are teaching them that they can get away with it again… and so, they WILL. — In one way or another — and in possibly an even more aggregious way — they WILL disrespect you again.

Therefore, when someone you know disrespects you — after you have been nothing but respectful towards them — call them out on it.  — Don’t turn the other cheek. —  Tell them that you don’t appreciate the way that they have talked to you, or treated you, and that you will not tolerate being disrespected like that.  Write them off of your “friends” list, and have nothing further to do with them, until they apologize and make amends (which means giving you something, or doing something for you, as compensation) for their actions.

Living your life according to this principle, minimizes the amount of negative emotions and circumstances that you will ultimately have to endure and deal with, in your life… and makes those who are prone to being disrespectful of others, to be more respectful of YOU, in the future.

WARNING! — This only applies to people you know, that you know are not INSANE!  — If a stranger, or a possibly insane person, is disrespectful towards you… get away from them as quickly as you can, without appearing like weak prey to a predator!  — With strangers and insane people, there’s no telling what might prompt them to physical violence and result in them assaulting you, when you attempt to stand up to their disrespectful and often boorish behavior.  With some people — it’s better to be smart enough to avoid a possibly violent confrontation, and just be safe… than to be right and respected by someone who isn’t even really a part of your life.

Last but not least…

SPREAD THE LOVE… (and I don’t mean physically)… — Be kind to everyone you meet.  — Extend your hand of friendship to anyone who truly desires it… — Lend a helping hand when needed or when asked for, in any way that you possibly can… — Teach others to do the same, by providing them with a good example to follow… — Live a life that promotes love and harmony amongst the people of the Earth.

— Every man, woman, and child on the Earth, really is your Brother or Sister in Life… because we all come from the same well-spring of LIFE, and we all share the same LIFE SPARK that powers our bodies, and is at the core of our souls.  GOD (or whatever you want to call our creator, and the source of our lives) is INSIDE of every person, and every other life form.  So please, keep that in mind as you go about your busy life in the world, and SPREAD THE LOVE OF LIFE with everyone you meet.
